Make-Up/Hair/Costume Decisons

Hair

My decision with hair was to go with a natural style and leave it loose.

Why?
With Eve and Leah, if I were to choose them, they could have a range of different hairstyles and therefore I'd need to make a decision. In terms of indie pop magazines, which I looked at in my inspirations post, I saw that most kept the hair loose and didn't tie it up. It was likely tidied up with heat products and some models may have had their hair straightened but it looked natural. There were a great deal of benefits associated with this. Also, Becky's hair cannot be put into a braid or tied up because she doesn't have a great deal of hair to work with. Her hair would be left natural and short. This does have a lot of benefits. Becky's hair has a lot of personality in it. Her short, shaven hair is eye-catching and most people assume there is a story behind it and behind why she shaved her head (cancer research charity event). As well as this, it draws attention to her face and makes us focus on that. This is good in a magazine as the model's face is very important for conveying expression and meaning.

. When looking at natural hair, I made this infographic to help me consider things. As you can tell, pro's outweigh cons.

Makeup

My decision with makeup was to do a smokey eye but tint it the color of the model in questions eye to bring out eye color. I've also planned to have light contour, a thick and full coverage base, and neutral lips.

Why?

To help me decide which would be the best way to do my models makeup, I've looked at several make-up tutorials by various YouTubers. I've also included an analysis of each of the five looks.

LOOK NO.1

Nikki is an amazing makeup artist and every tutorial she does is pure beauty. This look is incredibly pretty and the definition around the eyes really makes them stand out. Eye contact between subject and reader can be very powerful so drawing attention to the eyes is important. This look also has highlighting and contouring, which can reshape the face and make people look infinitely more attractive. The glitter in this look also really helps the eyes stand out and sparkle, though it's messy and hard to apply so I'm not a real fan on of it. Nikki used lavender eye-shadow in this tutorial and purple has connotations with royalty, luxury, and sleekness. This makes this look quite classy.

Recreating it wasn't too difficult and I really liked the way it looked on me. My eyes stood out a lot and I really liked that. It was a powerful look.

LOOK 2:

Smokey eye looks are considered night time looks and they're quite harsh. This look would go well with an invitational facial expression as it's considered to be quite seductive. It emphasizes the eyes even more than Look 1 does because of the black - which is the harshest shade you can put on your eyes. Similarly to the last, black also has connotations of luxury and sleekness, and this is also a classy look.

This was slightly harder as the falloff from your eyes is black and therefore smudges are very noticeable. However,  my eyes stood out more than ever so I did like this look.

LOOK 3:

I wanted to look at a makeup tutorial including the color blue as I have blue eyes. I knew that using the same color would really bring them out. That look did this. It brought out a lot of color, which I liked. This look is quite bright and uses vibrant colors, which makes the eyes pop but also makes the model seem more awake and can even make them look more youthful.

The thing I enjoyed the most about this look was how much it brought out the color in my eyes. My potential models do not all have the same eye color as me so I'd use green if I were to use Becky or Eve,

LOOK 4:

I looked at this final tutorial because I wanted to look at multiple colors. This was the only tutorial that I really didn't like. On the girl in the video, it looks very pretty however I felt my eyes looked cluttered and that the colors didn't blend as well as I would've liked. It would have made my eyes stand out beyond belief however I didn't feel like it looked very attractive when I recreated it with the products I have.

I will not likely be using this look in my magazine however it was interesting to play around with and useful in finding out what I didn't like so much.

Costume

My model will have three costume changes, one for each page. One will be in a black top with black jeans. Another in a button up shirt with black jeans. Another will be in a dress.

Why?

With my front cover, I want plain black so that overlapping text doesn't contrast. This is a simple casual outfit so I may use props to draw in attention.
With my contents page, I want something that looks sophisticated, Button ups are very professional.
With my DPS, I wanted something fun. This is why I chose dresses.

I had to work with my models to figure out what kinds of dresses they already owned and, after talking through a selection - we chose dresses that looked like this.

The black shirts and button ups will look a little more like this.

Drawing these images has helped me to visualize what my models will look a little more like on the day. This is helpful as it makes it easier for me to figure out what to do pose wise and what will look good.
