To determine whether or not I was ready to finish up my product, I showed my work to my class and asked them to give feedback. The feedback was resoundingly positive and this told me that I was ready to finish my products and move onto my evaluation.

Contents Page #6 - Feedback

My cousin is a member of my target audience as he is a twenty year old man with a well-paying job who enjoys indie music. I asked him to look at the draft I've done and give me one-on-one feedback to help me improve:

Yeah, this looks better now that you’ve filled the extra space. And the black really makes them stand out. I like it. I think it looks really bold and good. I don’t have any complaints.

The new thing at the bottom and the new barcode make it look a lot more professional and I think the fonts look a lot better. The black behind the text makes everything really stand out and it’s eyegrabbing. And I like the way you’ve changed the contrast on the image and added red into the shadows. It’s edited really nicely so that it’s eye grabbing. I don’t have any complaints on this one.

This one matches your other pages a lot more now because you’ve taken some of the colour out of the models. You’ve made the T.A seem younger but I think you wanted that. It’s more colourful and more exciting and you’ve got a lot more red – which is really powerful. You’ve got a little bit of empty space, could you fill that?

This one’s the best. The way you’ve edited the colour looks very professional and it creates a really strong colour scheme. The black and red and white contrast is strong and it’s really exciting to look at. I love this. I don’t have any complaints.

The layouts changed to be more like Kerrang’s now. The bit along the bottom where it asks you to subscribe looks professional. I like that. I like the new font as well. It’s mature and it matches the rest of the page. And the line along the top where it says Jukebox, is that new? That looks good.

This one’s got a lot more colour. That makes it stand out and there’s contrast with the reds. You can see the highlights a lot better too. I don’t know if I like it. I think it might be too much and I think the contrast is a little bit too much. Maybe if it were slightly less saturated it would look better. I think you needed to add some colour but this was a bit too much.

My cousin is a member of my target audience as he is a twenty year old man with a well-paying job who enjoys indie music. I asked him to look at the draft I've done and give me one-on-one feedback to help me improve:

This one is really clean and professional. The red in the colour scheme stands out and really draws your attention in. Some of the text really blends in with the background so you might want to change that and make it stand out a bit more. I like the new placement on the Platinum City bit, I think that looks a lot better. It’s definitely improved a lot.

The editor’s note looks more fancy here and I like that you’ve got a signature on it. It makes it seem more personal. And I think it’s clearer which page is associated with which article. The yellow also really directs your attention in. The features bit looks a bit out of place though because it appeals to a younger audience and the rest of the page is really mature. I don’t know though because I know you have a mixed target audience.

DPS Feedback

I may put page numbers on both pages as this would help my readers to navigate my magazine at the same time as filling up space on my page.

This tells me that I should keep these aspects the same.

I feel as if there is plenty of color present on my DPS so I don't know if this feedback is suggesting I try different colors. I'm not sure if I want to do this because I like the red color scheme.

I'm not changing the red color scheme. I have considered other colors and the red is the most powerful. I could change the font in the text however I like the readability of the one I have now. I will be changing the font size though.

I don't think I need subimages on my double page spread.

If the font looks better smaller than I'll likely add more text.

I will make it smaller.

DPS #1 and #2 - Feedback

My cousin is a member of my target audience as he is a twenty year old man with a well-paying job who enjoys indie music. I asked him to look at the draft I've done and give me one-on-one feedback to help me improve:

I like the fonts on that one. I like the picture too. It’s really interesting with the sweets. This one’s really colourful and the title really draws your attention in. The pull quotes draw your attention in well as well. I think that’s cool. You need to add things to that black bar on the top though.

The background’s nice because it adds to the theme. I’m not sure if it looks unprofessional though. Also the writing on the black bar is good. The ‘big story’ would attract a readers attention.

Front Cover #3 - Feedback

My cousin is a member of my target audience as he is a twenty year old man with a well-paying job who enjoys indie music. I asked him to look at the draft I've done and give me one-on-one feedback to help me improve:

I like this photo the best. It’s more exciting than the other two so it belongs on a front page more. And this one’s got more colour. And it looks more like the competing magazine you showed me so you can tell it fits its genre. The layout is really professional but I don’t like the font I think it looks a little childish. Also I think it’s a little too dark.

Front Cover #2 - Feedback

My cousin is a member of my target audience as he is a twenty year old man with a well-paying job who enjoys indie music. I asked him to look at the draft I've done and give me one-on-one feedback to help me improve:

I like this one a lot more. It’s a nice photo and I like the fonts. I think it’s a good idea to include something like free posters because it’ll inspire people to buy your magazine. You’ve got quite a few different articles so that makes it look more interesting. And your main band, Platinum City, has a bigger font so it’s very clear what the main article is. I think it needs more colour though because it looks a bit bland at the moment. And the image needs a bit more editing to look really professional. And maybe change some of the fonts and move them around to fill all the space on the page.

You’ve changed a lot here but I like it. It looks a lot more mature now. The colour scheme is really peaceful and the font is more mature. I think the editor’s note is a selling point because it appeals directly to the audience – a direct mode of address. And I think the photo is more suited to this part of the magazine

This is a cool layout. It looks a bit like one from Q. I think you need to crop these images a bit so there’s less white and make the features section a bit bigger and easier to read. I like the ‘contents’  font. It’s different and it stands out. It looks like you’re appealing to a quite young audience though so you might want to make it more mature.

Peer Feedback

Over the course of our previous lessons, I created this draft. It's a slight alteration of my first draft that  took slightly more inspiration from Under The Radar. I did not make a separate post because all that has changed is the placement of the text and two additional buylines. I no longer have the images saved from the magazines I worked from but this was all heavily inspired by Under The Radar.

It had some of the convention that my front page will have when it is finished.  Our class, at the end of an assigned time period, went around the room with post-it notes leaving behind with instruction on what we can change to make the final product look better or fit the genre better. My draft was unfinished so I already knew there were things I'd have to change but this gave me some more ideas and things to consider.

I've already noted that I will need to add more sell points to my final product. I will do this with competitions, tagline, coverlines, and - potentially sub images.

I've chosen to make my masthead smaller this instance to mimic the style seen in my competitors magazine, Under The Radarr. This may change as I experiment with my masthead or it may not.

This is a valid suggestion that I will likely follow

I don't think that a plain background translates to a bland background and the entire cover will look less bland when it is full

I am not sure about sub images - if I use them I will only use a select few as that fits my target audience best

I haven't had a chance to implement the red colour scheme in the way I want to just yet. I'm still experimenting

I will need to add features such as an issue number and a barcode to my final products

I agree with this and will focus on my use of color in drafts to follow.

Front Page First Draft - Feedback

My cousin is a member of my target audience as he is a twenty year old man with a well-paying job who enjoys indie music. I asked him to look at the draft I've done and give me one-on-one feedback to help me improve:

I don’t really like it. It’s very plain. The background is boring. It’s really hard to read the text that says ‘Ignition’ on top of the checked shirts. Also, I wouldn’t say that the image looks like a front cover image. It would look better with text down the sides. The font for the title is good – simple and bold. I also like the fact that Becky is in front of the word Jukebox because it looks professional and it brings her forward.

Reader Profile

This is my reader profile, it's based off of the NME reader profile.

This has, once again, helped me to cement my understanding of who my target audience is. This will help immensely as it contains a moodboard and a written description of traits I have identified.

Survey - Individual

To further expand my knowledge of what I need to do to make my magazine appeal to my target audience, I sought out someone who matched my demographic. Neil is just above the average age of my competitions reader base and, whilst he's not an extreme indie music fan, he listens to indie music.

Alternate video:

Doing this has let me know that the best gifts to appeal to my target audience will be free downloads of songs and that a red color scheme will appeal. It also let me know that I could open up my readership with an online version of my magazine, thus I could consider making reference to our website in the magazine.

Upon first completing this survey I was left with an uneven split between gender - with 13 males and 10 females. I felt as if this skewed my results so that my T.A would be appear to male even if everyone said they enjoyed indie music. I need to have an even amount of people to see my real demographic.
Unfortunately, I couldn't do the same with my age groups as the group I had the most access to were around my age and fell into the 16 - 20 range. I did try my best to survey people from outside of this age rang but it was incredibly difficult.
EDIT:  I realized afterwards my mistake of not including an option for 26-30 (a mistake made when I had to recreate my survey the second time) however this has not skewed results as no one asked was in that age range.
And because my main age group is 16-20, I had a lot of college students.

Again, the majority are students. However, the adults that I questioned are from a range of employments. I did not get any results from anyone who was part of a semi or unskilled manual occupation. Originally, this question was the preceded by a question asking about social status, to get the best possible idea about who my target audience is. This question was taken out because I decided that it was too invasive.
However, this question gives me an idea of social status. AB profiles have higher & intermediate managerial, administrative, professional occupations. C1 profiles have supervisory, clerical & junior managerial, administrative, professional occupations. C2 have skilled manual occupations. DE profiles are semi-unskilled or unemployed. This does not give us full insight into social status but it helps us guess.
This gives us more specific view into peoples jobs.

The reason that I asked these questions was to compare my target audience to the target audience of Under The Radar. Just to recap, their advertising page tells us these statistics:
65% enjoy alcoholic beverages
100% own computers
80% spend at least 3.5 hours per day online
95% have at least one video game system
82% own cell phones
Every one of my respondents reported that they regularly listen to music. The majority enjoy indie music. Only four report that they do not. Two of those are the construction workers. One was an older woman and one was one of the younger girl.
That means that I have 12 males who enjoy indie music and 10 females.
That makes my male vs female percentages into 55% male VS 45% female.
A further 12 said that it's one of their favorite genres. There is still more males than females in this category.
12 people enjoy indie pop. I have a specific target audience consisting of 8 people. Anna, George, Jake, Kieron, Nina, Beth, and Richard. 5 men, 3 women. One of these people was between the ages of 21-25, one was between the age of 31-35. The rest were within the 16 - 20 group.

This question let me look at what other genres people were interested in. The one that people liked the most was rock, secondary was pop, and the third was rap. I could take influences from these types of music to boost sales however only pop really plays into my genre - so this may be difficult.

This was interesting  because it told me that 8 people find out about new music through magazines but only 3 use it as a primary source of new music. The most common is, as expected, online is the most common. That's because a lot of young people spend a great deal of time online.
These are artists that I was thinking of mentioning on my front cover and I wanted to see how well they were known. It's clearly worth mentioning 21P and Vampire Weekend and to run a big story on The 1975.
This tells me that most people only buy magazines rarely, which shows how I really need to make this magazine stand out if I want young people to be attracted to my magazine. It also tells me that no one buys magazines frequently - so the only people who frequently receive and read magazines are the five who are subscribed to magazines. This tells me that if I want to build up a reader-base then I need to push for subscribers.
This was to see if people had heard of my competitors or similar magazines. Most people had heard Kerrang! and Q. This tells me that they are magazines I need to learn from as they have heavy brand recognition with the people around me.
Most people would prefer a monthly magazine. This is frequent enough for sustained interest and guarantees that people won't forget about your product however this is easier to afford. There is a clear preference for this among potential readers.
Gifts importance is exaggerated in magazines. People prefer exciting content to free gifts. This should clearly be prioritized.

People seem to be most interested in articles about the music as opposed to the personal lives of the stars. This will translate into what I write about in my double page spread.

People seem to like wristbands and posters the very most. I will advertise posters on my front covers and maybe some wristbands. Other mentions within the 'Other' box included:
  • Free samples (e.g aftershave)
  •  Those little side magazines that have extra interviews etc.
  • Vouchers
  • Event tickets
  • Demo CD's
  • Makeup
